Simpiwe Sihawu professionally known by his stage name, Mr Thela, is a South African DJ and producer who pioneered what is now known as Cape Town Gqom /Gqom Gospel /Church Grooves.
Mr Thela has been producing since High School but it was his joint album, MAKE CAPE TOWN GREAT AGAIN, released in 2020 during lockdown, that dominated airwaves and virtual house parties across the country, with the lead single ‘iParty’ being picked up for the Netflix production of the movie JIVA! soundtrack.
In a sea of carbon producers, Mr Thela has cultivated his signature sound by creating a forward-thinking gqom that is infused with a melodic gospel sound. The solo artist who hails from Cape Town has taken it upon himself to put his province on the musical map and will stop at nothing until his name has been edged in the history books.
From Netflix and ShowMax features to international gigs, South African Producer and DJ, Mr Thela is undeniably one of the most influential figures on the rise. In a sea of carbon producers, Mr Thela has cultivated his signature sound, pioneering what is now known as Cape Town Gqom, Gqom Gospel, Church Groove or Isghubu.
He first burst onto the scene during the height of the global pandemic which resulted in a lockdown in 2020 with his joint album MAKE CAPE TOWN AGAIN with the popular duo Mshayi & Mr Thela.
MAKE CAPE TOWN GREAT AGAIN was certified platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) and was nominated for Best Gqom Album at the 2021 SAMAs (South African Music Awards). The hit single ‘iParty’ was featured in the Netflix Originals movie, JIVA!
