From Netflix and ShowMax features to international gigs, South African Producer and DJ, Mr Thela is undeniably one of the most influential figures on the rise. In a sea of carbon producers, Mr Thela has cultivated his signature sound, pioneering what is now known as Cape Town Gqom, Gqom Gospel, Church Groove or Isghubu.
He first burst onto the scene during the height of the global pandemic which resulted in a lockdown in 2020 with his joint album MAKE CAPE TOWN AGAIN with the popular duo Mshayi & Mr Thela.
MAKE CAPE TOWN GREAT AGAIN
was certified platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) and was nominated for Best Gqom Album at the 2021 SAMAs (South African Music Awards). The hit single ‘iParty’ was featured in the Netflix Originals movie, JIVA!
The duo amicably split after their follow-up, MAKE CAPE TOWN GREAT AGAIN 2.0 and in 2022, Mr Thela established his record label, Tronics Land, which saw the release of his first solo album ‘Tronics Land Series 1’. The album singles ‘Hamba Nathi’ ft SAMA award-winning artist Betusile and ‘Impempe’ became instant hits and received overwhelming airplay.
Tronics Land Series 2
followed, defined as ‘a musical masterpiece’ by GQ South Africa, became his most successful solo project, released in November 2023, debuting at no. 4 on SA iTunes/Apple Music and no.5 on Spotify. The album remained in the top 10 albums for over 10 weeks and its single ‘Kwandonga Ziyaduma’ ft Njelic was certified Gold by RiSA.
In 2024 Mr Thela signed a music deal with the internationally acclaimed and leading recording label, Universal Music Group to advance his music distribution and reach.

Simpiwe Sihawu professionally known by his stage name, Mr Thela, is a South African DJ and producer who pioneered what is now known as Cape Town Gqom /Gqom Gospel /Church Grooves.
Mr Thela has been producing since High School but it was his joint album, MAKE CAPE TOWN GREAT AGAIN, released in 2020 during lockdown, that dominated airwaves and virtual house parties across the country, with the lead single ‘iParty’ being picked up for the Netflix production of the movie JIVA! soundtrack.
In a sea of carbon producers, Mr Thela has cultivated his signature sound by creating a forward-thinking gqom infused with a melodic gospel sound. The solo artist who hails from Cape Town has taken it upon himself to put his province on the musical map and will stop at nothing until his name has been edged in the history books
